BILL LIEBOLD --Biographical Sketch

Senior Associate
Nonprofit Management Group, LLC and

President
The Liebold Group

Bill Liebold, Senior Associate of the Nonprofit Management Group, is president of The Liebold Group, an LLC formed to provide trusted advice to not-for-profit and higher education clients in the areas of board building, resource development and government relations.

Prior to establishing The Liebold Group, Mr. Liebold served as president of the Michigan Colleges Foundation (MCF) from 1991-2007 and led the organization to the most successful period in its 60-year history. In recognition of his outstanding service, the Board of Trustees awarded Mr. Liebold the designation president emeritus, and established an endowed scholarship fund in his name.

Established in 1949, the Michigan Colleges Foundation is a not-for-profit Michigan corporation that serves as a vital link between 14 Michigan non-tax-supported, four-year liberal arts colleges and the state’s corporate and foundation communities.

Under Mr. Liebold’s leadership, MCF raised more than $32 million, doubled its endowment and established named scholarship programs with many of Michigan’s leading corporations and foundations. During his tenure the organization also initiated and managed collaborative programs that annually save its member institutions millions of dollars. Additionally, Mr. Liebold was instrumental in launching an innovative pre-college program, the Detroit Bridge Program, to boost urban high school graduation rates and enhance diversity at MCF member institutions. This program engages first-generation, low-income, Detroit-area students in mapping a pathway to college through year-round, campus-based programs and activities that provide academic enrichment, college preparation and leadership development.

Mr. Liebold was born and raised in Dearborn, Michigan. He earned a bachelor's degree (with distinction) from the University of Michigan-Dearborn and a Master’s of Public Administration degree from the University of Southern California's Washington, D.C. Public Affairs Center. In April, 2001 Mr. Liebold received the Distinguished Service Award from the University of Michigan-Dearborn College of Arts, Sciences, and Letters. In May, 2005 he was awarded the degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa from Adrian College.

Mr. Liebold was elected by his colleagues nationwide to a three-year term (2004-2007) as Vice Chair and Presiding Officer of the Foundation for Independent Higher Education (FIHE). FIHE is the Michigan Colleges Foundation’s national partner, and is comprised of a network of 36 state and regional higher education associations representing 656 independent colleges and universities serving over 1.5 million students. He also chaired the team that created and administered the FIHE/UPS Venture Fund, which has since leveraged over $14 million nationally in support of independent higher education.

Mr. Liebold began his career in public service in 1968 as a VISTA volunteer in rural Kentucky teaching reading and math to young adults. He later joined the faculty of the Detroit Business Institute as an instructor of English.

From 1975 to 1982 Mr. Liebold served as a Special Assistant in the Michigan and Washington, D.C. offices of then-Congressman Jim Blanchard. During this period he helped secure Congressional passage and enactment of the Chrysler Loan Guarantee Act and the Great Lakes Protection Act.
From 1983 to 1990 Mr. Liebold served as Special Assistant and Cabinet Secretary to Michigan Governor Jim Blanchard. In this role he raised a record-setting $1.7 million for charitable and community service agencies as chair of the first-ever Michigan State Employees Combined Campaign.
Mr. Liebold is a member of the adjunct faculty in the discipline of Political Science at Oakland (MI) Community College.

Mr. Liebold is a graduate of the Leadership Detroit and Leadership Michigan programs. He serves as chair of the Board of Governors of the Southfield, Michigan Skyline Club, and is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital, the Michigan Nonprofit Association and NPower Michigan, an organization that provides technology assistance to not-for-profit organizations. He is active in a number of national and local professional and service organizations, a sampling of which includes the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels, the Detroit Economic Club, the Michigan Press Association, the Michigan Political History Society and Mackinac Associates, an organization dedicated to preserving the history and culture of Mackinac Island, Michigan.

Bill and his wife Cam are active supporters of a wide variety of Michigan charitable activities and of Michigan's public libraries. Their leisure time interests include reading, travel and Great Lakes freighters.
